Galactic kinematics with modified Newtonian dynamics

چکیده
We look for observational signatures that could discriminate between Newtonian and modified Newtonian (MOND) dynamics in the Milky Way, in view of the advent of large astrometric and spectroscopic surveys. Indeed, a typical signature of MOND is an apparent disk of “phantom” dark matter, which is uniquely correlated with the visible disk-density distribution. Due to this phantom dark disk, Newtonian models with a spherical halo have different signatures from MOND models close to the Galactic plane. The models can thus be differentiated by measuring dynamically (within Newtonian dynamics) the disk surface density at the solar radius, the radial mass gradient within the disk, or the velocity ellipsoid tilt angle above the Galactic plane. Using the most realistic possible baryonic mass model for the Milky Way, we predict that, if MOND applies, the local surface density measured by a Newtonist will be approximately 78 M /pc2 within 1.1 kpc of the Galactic plane, the dynamically measured disk scale-length will be enhanced by a factor of 1.25 with respect to the visible disk scale-length, and the local vertical tilt of the velocity ellipsoid at 1 kpc above the plane will be approximately 6 degrees. None of these tests can be conclusive for the present-day accuracy of Milky Way data, but they will be of prime interest with the advent of large surveys such as GAIA. keywords: gravitation – Stars: kinematics – Galaxy: fundamental parameters – Galaxy: kinematics and dynamics – Galaxy: structure

Galaxy groups and the modified dynamics
I estimate Modified-Dynamics (MOND), median M/L values for recently published catalogues of galaxy groups. While the median, Newtonian M/L values quoted for these catalogues are (110 − 200)h75(M/L) , the corresponding values for MOND are less than 10 (M/L) (where the mass includes contributions from galactic, and intra-group gas). متن کاملOn the relationship between MOND and DM
Numerous astrophysical observations have shown that classical Newtonian dynamics fails on galactic scales and beyond, if only visible matter is taken into account. The two most popular theoretical concepts dealing with this problem are Dark Matter (DM) and Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). In the first part of this paper it is demonstrated that a generalized MOND equation can be derived in th...
متن کاملTesting the Self-Consistency of MOND With Three Dimensional Galaxy Kinematics
We propose a technique to test the idea that non-standard dynamics, rather than dark matter halos, might be responsible for the observed rotation curves of spiral galaxies. In the absence of non-luminous matter, a galactic disk’s rotational velocity and its vertical velocity dispersion can be used jointly to test the self-consistency of the galaxy’s dynamics. A specific illustrative example, us...
متن کاملAlternatives to Dark Matter ( ? )
It has long been known that Newtonian dynamics applied to the visible matter in galaxies and clusters does not correctly describe the dynamics of those systems. While this is generally taken as evidence for dark matter it is in principle possible that instead Newtonian dynamics (and with it General Relativity) breaks down in these systems. Indeed there have been a number of proposals as to how ...
